Rhodes island

Rhodes belongs in the Dodekanesse island complex and it is the largest in size and population. It lies in the south east side of Mediteranean, 11 miles away from the Turkey shores. It is connected with  Athens international airport Elefterios Venizelos  as well as with Piraeus port daily. It is also connected during summer time with direct charter flights from Europe United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, Prague, Finland, Belgium, France, Luxemburg. From Russia through Heraklion  Crete.

According to Greek mythology Rhode as the eldest daughter of Oceanos (Ocean ) and Tythis or Poseidon (Neptune) and Alia  or Poseidon and Amphitritae, who was married to Helios (Sun) and gave her name to the island.Rhodes is an island of fascinating environment,  covered  with pine tree and cypress forests and is the home of the beatiful Rhodian deer. Trianda is the valley of the butterflies, which during the summer time can be found in masses.

Rhodes has glorious history and has been famous during ancient times for the  Colossus, a status of Helios(sun) one of the seven wonders during antiquity. During your visit in Rhodes do not miss to visit the ancient part of the city- founded in 408 B.C, where you can visit and admire the ruins of the Zeus temple, Athena polaidos and Apollo, Gymnasium, the theatre and the stadium. The island had experienced several occupations during its life from the antiquity until 1948. Carians, the Phoenicians and the Minoans, who came from Crete, were some of the nations, that invaded the island.  Rhodes under  the Mycenaean power, had a prosperous life for 350 years. In 1100 B .C. the Dorians, who succeeded the Mycenaeans, founded the three great and famous cities of Lindos, Kameiros and Ialyssos. They went under the Persians, Romans, Byzatium and finally Turkish occupation until 1912 and then passed to Italians. Rhodes was occupied by the British army until 1948, and then it as incorporated  with Greece with the rest of the Dodecanese.

In the island of Rhodes lived famous people such as  Diagoras of Rhodes, a famous Olympic games champion,  Cleopvoulos of Lindos, who was a tyrant ans was one of the Seene Sages.

The city has an exelent infrasructure and offers a vivid  night life, interesting cultural events, variety of  sports, and day trips to Lindos and  the nearby islands such as Kos, Patmos, Karpathos, Kalymos, Halki and Leros.
