Lefkas

Lefkada  belongs to the Ionian island complex  and it was once connected with the mainland of Greece. Today is connected with the mainland with a floating bridge and it takes about 5 hours from Athens  to get in Lefkada.  Lefkada island is only  302 square kilometers  and it is the fourth largest island in the Ionian archipelagos.

The island is connected with Athens airport, Elefterios Venizelos daily  and there are direct charter flights to Preveza airport (30 minutes away from Lefkada) from United kingdom,Germany, Austria, Chez Republic and Holland.  The small Lefkada ports,  Vassiliki and Nidri  connect Lefkada with Kefalonia island  and it takes 1 hour from Vassiliki to Fiskardo and 2 hours from Nidri.

Lefkada means “white stone” and has taken her name from the cape Kefkatas, which is made of the limestone cliffs. It is said that the poet Sapho gave an end to her life in those  cliffs, when the young man Phaon refused  her love. The island’s history can be traced back in the Paleolithic era.  Some of the archaeologists  such as Wilhelm Dorpfed believes that Nidri, was the real Homeric Ithaca. The island of Lefkada finally was reunited with Greece as the  rest of the Ionian islands (eptanissa) in 1864 after long and different occupations from Romans, Venetians, French and English.

Lefkada’s architecture has not been influenced  by the Venetians  as it happened in Corfu and Zakynthos. The   town was  built  in 1684,  and the houses were small, double-decked wooden buildings with tiles. The island of Lefkada suffered from  earthquakes and  people had to rebuild their houses several times.  They used the same materials wood and tiles, but now  they make  the upper part lighter, as they  use steel sheet. The same technique is used even today. Strolling in  the historic center you will find  many  of  those buildings.

While visiting Lefkada do not forget to visit the historic churches  of  Saint Syridonas and Saint Nikolaos, Pantkratoras, Saint Minas, Panagia ton Vlahernon and Faneromeni monastery. All those churches is worth to visit them as  are of exceptional beauty and architecture.
The town’s  museums are revealing the island’s cultural heritage and it  is worth visitng the archaeological museum and the public Library, which hosts icons from  the after Byzantine era and Charmoglios Library.

An other worth visiting site is,  the natural beauty place  of Gyra, which is a narrow piece of  white sand which embraces the lagoon on the north of the island and begins from the Kastro and reaching the other site of the  town. Inside the lagoon is the “ivari”,  where fish is bred in  a traditional  wicker baskets. You can also admire wild swans, geese and ducks in the island’s lake.

Lefkada is popular among tourists not only for its architecture, but mostly for its  unbelievable beautiful  beaches such as Pefkoulia, Agios Nikitas,  Vassiliki, Agios Ioannis, Kathisma, Nidri most of them with blue waters similar to  Caribbean colors and the famous of all Porto Katsiki, known for its idyllic charm and  beauty.  Most of the beaches offer diving and water sports facilities that enable tourist to enjoy their wedding, vacation, or honeymoon   in Lefkada.

Lefkada port  has a private marina which  can  accommodate up to 620 yachts.
